The Consumer Protection Act was brought into operation in the year 1986.

This Act was enacted to provide for the better protection of the interests of consumers and to establish consumer councils and other authorities for the settlement of consumer disputes. The Act came into force on 24th December, 1986, and was amended in 1991, 1993, and 2002 to make it more effective and comprehensive. The Act was replaced by the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, which came into force on 20th July, 2020, and introduced several new features such as e-commerce regulation, product liability, mediation, etc.
