Explanation
THE UNION PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION (UPSC) IS A CONSTITUTIONAL BODY IN INDIA THAT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR CONDUCTING CIVIL SERVICES EXAMINATIONS AND RECRUITMENT TO VARIOUS POSTS IN THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT. THE FOLLOWING IS A LIST OF WOMEN WHO HAVE SERVED AS THE CHAIRMAN OF THE UPSC IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER:
1. ROZE MILLIAN BETHEW (1952-1953) - She was the first woman to serve as the Chairman of the UPSC. She held the position for one year from 1952 to 1953.
2. SUSHILA NAYYAR (1977-1979) - She was the second woman to be appointed as the Chairman of the UPSC. She served in this position from 1977 to 1979.
3. VEENA ARORA (1989-1990) - She was the third woman to serve as the Chairman of the UPSC. She held the position from 1989 to 1990.
4. PURNIMA ADVANI (2006-2008) - She was the fourth woman to be appointed as the Chairman of the UPSC. She served in this position from 2006 to 2008.
5. DEEPA DAS MUNSHI (2008-2009) - She was the fifth woman to serve as the Chairman of the UPSC. She held the position from 2008 to 2009.
It is worth noting that the UPSC has been headed by only five women in its over 90 years of existence, reflecting the persistent gender gap in India's civil services and public administration.
