Explanation
Harish Salve represented India in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for the Kulbhushan Jadhav case.
Kulbhushan Jadhav was a retired Indian naval officer who was arrested by Pakistani authorities in March 2016 and was accused of espionage and terrorism-related activities. He was later sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court in April 2017.
India approached the ICJ in May 2017, seeking a stay on Jadhav's execution and a verdict that would declare the Pakistani military court's decision null and void. Harish Salve was the lead counsel representing India at the ICJ.
In July 2019, the ICJ ruled in favor of India and ordered Pakistan to grant consular access to Jadhav and to review the death sentence awarded to him by the Pakistani military court. Pakistan subsequently granted consular access to Jadhav, and in July 2020, the Pakistani government passed the Kulbhushan Jadhav (Review and Reconsideration) Ordinance, 2020, which allowed Jadhav to appeal against his sentence in a civilian court.
The Kulbhushan Jadhav case has been a contentious issue between India and Pakistan and has been the subject of much political and diplomatic debate.
