"Peri" means around and "trichous" refers to hair-like structures, which in this case, are flagella. So peritrichous bacteria have multiple flagella distributed all around the cell surface.
Monotrichous bacteria have a single flagellum at one end of the cell, while lophotrichous bacteria have multiple flagella at one or both ends of the cell. Amphitrichous bacteria have a single flagellum at each end of the cell.
