The ozone layer is found in the Earth's stratosphere. The stratosphere is a layer of the Earth's atmosphere located above the troposphere, extending from about 10 kilometers (6 miles) to 50 kilometers (31 miles) above the Earth's surface. The ozone layer is situated within the stratosphere, specifically in the lower portion of the stratosphere, approximately 10 to 30 kilometers (6 to 18 miles) above the Earth's surface.
The ozone layer contains a high concentration of ozone (O3) molecules, which are formed when oxygen (O2) molecules are exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the Sun. The ozone layer plays a crucial role in protecting life on Earth by absorbing most of the Sun's harmful ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation. This absorption of UV-B radiation helps to shield the Earth's surface from excessive exposure to UV rays, which can cause skin cancer, cataracts, damage to marine life, and other adverse effects.
It is important to note that the ozone layer is not evenly distributed across the Earth but varies in thickness due to natural processes and human activities. Certain regions, such as the polar regions, experience seasonal thinning of the ozone layer known as the ozone hole, primarily caused by human-produced chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and other ozone-depleting substances.
