The increasing pace of contemporary life in the cities and the nuclear family are compelling men to expect more from their wives, if not actually in work, at least in companionship and a deeper understanding of their problems. Education and leisure, fewer children, modern amenities which lighten domestic duties are giving women the urge and time to look beyond the kitchen and home. Hence the time is propitious for establishing a new kind of harmony which gives the greatest opportunities for working as partners and for finding fulfilment. Through the ages the Indian woman has consciously or unconsciously helped to preserve, to reconcile and to carry forward our traditions and culture. Today, every home is buffeted by winds of change from all directions. How can we progress without being blown from our moorings ? Our future depends greatly on whether the Indian woman has the wisdom and discrimination to distinguish between what to respect and what to reject, whether she is able to achieve a harmonious synthesis between the best of our tradition and the most desirable of the modern.
