Explanation
Corporal Jyoti Prakash Nirala was an Indian Air Force Garud Commando who was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra, India's highest peacetime military decoration, on January 26, 2018. He was awarded the medal for his bravery and selfless sacrifice in a mission against terrorists in the Hajin area of Jammu and Kashmir on November 18, 2017.
During the mission, Corporal Nirala was part of a joint team of the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force that was tasked with taking down a group of heavily armed terrorists who were holed up in a house. Despite being seriously injured in the initial assault, Corporal Nirala continued to engage the terrorists, providing cover to his fellow soldiers and saving several lives in the process.
Corporal Nirala ultimately succumbed to his injuries, but his bravery and sacrifice were widely recognized and celebrated throughout India. The Ashok Chakra was awarded to him posthumously in recognition of his extraordinary courage and devotion to duty, and he remains a source of inspiration to all those who serve in India's armed forces.
